Pix outage hits major bank apps as cause remains unclear
Users reported widespread disruption to Pix transfers and bank apps, while banks described technical problems and moved to restore service. The scale of complaints pointed to a broad incident, but available reports did not establish a single cause or confirm that every institution suffered the same failure.
A disruption to Brazil’s Pix instant-payment system on Friday evening affected customers attempting transfers and payments through several major bank apps, according to user reports compiled by Downdetector. Complaints began climbing shortly before 7 p.m., underscoring how quickly problems with Pix can affect routine transactions in a system used nationwide.1
The reports differed slightly on the size and timing of the peak, but pointed in the same direction. One account said notifications rose from 15 at 6:41 p.m. to nearly 11,000 at 7:11 p.m.; another recorded nearly 10,000 reports, with the highest volume at 7:06 p.m. Both cited problems involving transfers, payments and mobile banking apps.2
The disruption was reported across Banco do Brasil, Bradesco, Caixa Econômica Federal, Santander and Itaú, while Downdetector also showed increased reports involving Nubank, Banco Inter and the Central Bank. However, the monitoring site’s data alone could not identify the source of the instability or establish that all affected institutions experienced the same technical fault.1
Banks offered limited but more immediate accounts of their response. Itaú said it was aware of the Pix failure and that its “responsible team is taking care of everything to make the necessary adjustments as soon as possible.” Santander said at 7:45 p.m. that it had experienced “a systemic interruption” that had already been resolved.2
By 8:50 p.m., reported problems on Downdetector had fallen to 547, suggesting the most acute phase had eased. The Central Bank, which operates Pix infrastructure, had not commented, leaving the cause and the full extent of the episode unconfirmed.1
