Oregon school attack leaves Bend weighing courage, grief and prevention
Accounts of the Silver Rail Elementary shooting emphasize both the actions of people who confronted the attacker and the wider community’s grief, prayer and search for ways to prevent another tragedy.
Three children aged 5, 8 and 11 and a teacher were killed when a 16-year-old entered Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, after firing at locked doors, according to reports. A 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured. The attacker was later shot dead inside the building; investigators were examining his motive and how he obtained the shotgun.1
One account centered on the intervention of Kalub Giamanco, a 36-year-old parent whose children attend the school. It said he heard gunfire, followed the attacker into the building and shot him after the attack had begun in a special-education classroom. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek thanked the intervening man, saying his actions helped avert further deaths.2
A separate report described a teacher as another pivotal figure. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said she threw her phone at the attacker, knocked him down and fought him physically before Giamanco entered the room and fired. “She almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed,” Krantz said, while praising both people’s willingness to risk their lives for others.3
Other accounts focused less on the confrontation than on the fear experienced by survivors and the response that followed. Teacher Kathy Sheil Smith said pupils were terrified as they sheltered in her classroom: “Some children were praying; some children were comforting other children.”4
Catholic leaders and local officials urged collective support rather than offering easy explanations. Bishop Thomas Hennen said the community could mourn, support one another and commit to doing what it could to prevent future attacks. A vigil, crisis counseling and state emergency resources were organized as Bend began what Mayor Melanie Kebler called the difficult process of healing.5
