Cruzeiro’s surge deepens Grêmio’s crisis after Kaio Jorge hat-trick

Cruzeiro viewed the comeback as evidence that its pursuit of a Libertadores place remains on course, while Grêmio’s defeat intensified scrutiny of both the team’s results and the recruitment decisions behind its struggling campaign.

Cruzeiro and Grêmio emerged from a six-goal match with sharply different readings of what came next. For the visitors, the 4-2 victory was a valuable step toward continental qualification; for the hosts, it brought a seventh straight match without a win and renewed questions over the club’s planning.

Kaio Jorge scored three times as Cruzeiro overturned Grêmio’s early leads in Porto Alegre, with João Marcelo adding the fourth. The result moved Cruzeiro to 51 points and fourth place, while Grêmio remained 18th on 31 points in the relegation zone. Cruzeiro’s turnaround was aided after Kannemann was sent off in the second half, leaving the home side a player down as the visitors took control.

Cruzeiro coach Artur Jorge stressed that his side had put its previous defeat behind it rather than treating the win as a definitive statement. “We completely turned the page” for the Grêmio match, he said, describing a team that retained its identity and played “to win, to compete.” He framed the G4 position as progress, not an endpoint: “We were not the worst team in the world; we are not the best team in the world today.”

Grêmio coach Renato Gaúcho, by contrast, directed attention beyond the match itself, arguing that the squad’s construction had contributed to the club’s predicament. “There are many players there that nobody had ever heard of,” he said, calling for more rigorous assessment of recruits’ records, experience and suitability before they arrive.

Gaúcho said a competitive group cannot be built merely by acting on suggestions: “You have to know the player you are bringing in—the position, how many goals he scored, how many games he played, his career, his résumé.” Reports said he had put his position at the club’s disposal, although Grêmio had not officially confirmed that development.
