Kaio Jorge’s hat-trick lifts Cruzeiro as Grêmio turmoil deepens

Cruzeiro views its comeback win as evidence of a team pursuing continental football with composure, while Grêmio faces a far more urgent reckoning over results, recruitment and its fight to avoid relegation.

Kaio Jorge scored three times as Cruzeiro overturned a 2-1 half-time deficit to beat Grêmio 4-2 in Porto Alegre, a result that pushed the visitors to fourth in the Brasileirão on 51 points. Grêmio stayed 18th with 31 points and extended its winless run to seven matches.

The match offered sharply different consequences for the two clubs. Grêmio led through Carlos Vinícius’s penalty and a Pavón effort deflected by João Marcelo, but Kaio Jorge equalised before and after the interval, then completed his hat-trick to put Cruzeiro ahead. João Marcelo added the fourth after Kannemann was sent off for a second yellow card.

For Cruzeiro coach Artur Jorge, the response mattered more than the previous round’s defeat to Red Bull Bragantino. He said the team had “completely turned the page” for the Grêmio match and retained an identity focused on competing and winning away from home. The coach welcomed the move into the top four but resisted overstating it, describing Cruzeiro as “just a competent team” that had played well enough to beat its opponent.

His emphasis was on consistency in the seven remaining fixtures and a place in the 2027 Copa Libertadores. Cruzeiro have now scored in every league away match this season, according to Artur Jorge, who said the players had executed the game plan and taken many of their chances.

At Grêmio, the defeat instead sharpened scrutiny of recruitment and leadership. Renato Gaúcho reportedly put his position at the club’s disposal, though the club had not confirmed that account. After the game, he argued that squad-building requires detailed knowledge of a player’s record, position, statistics and career, rather than signings driven by informal recommendations: “That is not how you build a group.”

The contrast is stark: Cruzeiro sees the victory as another measured step toward a defined objective; Grêmio must quickly turn internal frustration into points if it is to climb out of the relegation zone.
