Flamengo’s Three-Goal Surge Restores the Lead as Libertadores Test Looms

Flamengo view the win over Bahia as both a crucial step in a tight domestic title race and a confidence boost before their Libertadores semifinal, while the narrow margin over Palmeiras leaves little room to ease off.

Flamengo returned to the top of the Brasileirão with a 3-0 victory over Bahia at Arena Fonte Nova, turning a goalless first half into a commanding second-half display. Jorginho opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Carrascal was brought down, before Plata headed in Samuel Lino’s cross and Lucas Paquetá completed the scoring with an individual effort.

The result lifted Flamengo to 67 points after 31 rounds, one ahead of Palmeiras, who had briefly taken first place after reaching 66 points with a win over Athletico-PR. The contrast is clear: Flamengo’s second-half control restored its advantage, but the one-point gap means the title contest remains finely balanced.

For Paquetá, the result carried significance beyond the league table. Reflecting on his goal, he described the move as instinctive: “I’m happy with the goal. I think it was all instinct there, to dribble and try to play individually.” He called the win “very important” for reclaiming the lead and said the team would now turn its attention to the continental competition.

That next challenge is a Libertadores semifinal second leg against Estudiantes at the Maracanã on Thursday. After a 0-0 draw in Argentina, Flamengo need a home victory to reach the final in regular time. Paquetá’s message was that the team prioritised the league while the Bahia match was being played, but could now use the momentum to prepare: “Now, with confidence from the victory, we’re going to rest to play a great game and achieve the objective of another Libertadores final.”

Flamengo therefore face two linked but competing demands: protect a slender Brasileirão lead and convert domestic momentum into a place in the Libertadores final.
