Carlos Bolsonaro says house arrest has left his father physically weakened
Carlos Bolsonaro portrays his father as mentally alert and still focused on politics, while arguing that house arrest has taken a visible physical toll. His account combines a personal health concern with criticism of the restrictions surrounding the former president.
Carlos Bolsonaro said Jair Bolsonaro was conscious and conversational during a two-hour visit at the former president’s Brasília residence, but described him as physically diminished under house arrest. The account presents two contrasting images: a politically engaged former leader, and a father whose appearance and strength have changed amid restricted movement.1
In a video posted to social media, Carlos said his father greeted him warmly and discussed Brazil’s political situation, football and the family’s next steps. “The old man is conscious, he’s well,” Carlos said, adding that Jair Bolsonaro asked him to send “a hug to Brazilians.”1
But Carlos also said the limitations of house arrest were affecting his father’s physical condition. Although Jair Bolsonaro has space to exercise, he said the former president had lost muscle mass and looked different: “He gets thin … the muscles become weaker, the belly gets a little bigger.”1
Carlos framed those changes as a consequence of the conditions imposed on his father, including the electronic ankle monitor, and said he intended to work to reverse Jair Bolsonaro’s legal situation. He did not provide details of the underlying cases, saying he sought to avoid comments that could harm his father’s position.1
The report does not include a medical diagnosis. Carlos said he hoped the physical changes were not signs of a more serious health problem, while maintaining that his father remained informed and interested in public affairs. He said he planned another visit and would continue political travel in support of his brother Flávio Bolsonaro.1
