Gabigol’s brace leaves São Paulo searching for answers

Santos viewed the comeback as evidence of a growing, confident squad, while São Paulo saw a match in which strong spells and created chances were undone by failure in the decisive moments.

São Paulo took the lead through Luciano’s penalty in the 34th minute, after a VAR review, but Santos answered almost immediately. Gabigol headed in Escobar’s cross to level the derby, then scored again early in the second half after a move involving Philippe Coutinho and Cebolinha. The 2–1 result gave Santos a fifth straight Brazilian league win and moved the club to seventh on 41 points; São Paulo remained 11th with 36.

For Santos, the result reinforced a sense of momentum rather than simply providing derby bragging rights. Coutinho, making his return after months out, said the comeback had been personally demanding but productive: “The return was a little difficult, but I think I endured it and managed to help.” He credited a squad in which “everyone dedicated themselves” and said the three points mattered in the push toward the top of the table.

São Paulo’s assessment was notably different. Coach Dorival emphasized the team’s attacking volume and the opportunities it created, arguing that the result did not reflect all that happened on the field. “What has been happening with São Paulo at many moments is inexplicable,” he said, adding that the side had chances but “were not happy at the most important moment, which is deciding games.”

Defender Arboleda similarly praised São Paulo’s opening-half display but focused less on finishing than on what followed Luciano’s goal. “The first half was wonderful; we did what the coach asked,” he said. “Unfortunately, we conceded two goals through a lack of concentration.”

The two readings converge on a tightly contested match: São Paulo created pressure, including a late Artur effort saved by Diógenes, but Santos converted its key moments. Santos next host Flamengo, while São Paulo travel to Cruzeiro.
