Motta Says Messages With Vorcaro Show No Improper Dealings

Reports portray Hugo Motta’s exchanges with Daniel Vorcaro as evidence of unusually close personal and business ties, while Motta argues that ordinary contact with business figures has been miscast as improper influence.

Messages reportedly recovered by Federal Police from former Banco Master owner Daniel Vorcaro’s phone have prompted competing readings of his relationship with Brazil’s House Speaker Hugo Motta. Accounts from across the political spectrum agree that the two exchanged friendly messages and discussed matters touching on Motta’s family; they differ over what those contacts signify.

The right-leaning account focused on a proposed partnership involving land in João Pessoa that was held in Motta’s sister-in-law’s name. It reported that the messages referred to a “partnership format” for the deal and that Banco Master extended a R$22 million loan to the relative’s company, helping finance the purchase of land intended for redevelopment. The same report said Motta later sought information from Vorcaro on issues including carbon-credit legislation and the deposit-guarantee fund, and that Vorcaro offered him a private flight.

Motta’s position is that the exchanges do not establish misconduct. “There is no illicit act portrayed in the published dialogues,” he said, rejecting what he called an attempt to portray decontextualized conversations as evidence of improper interests or favoritism. He said the private loan was agreed before allegations and investigations involving Banco Master and Vorcaro became public.

A left-leaning report emphasized the personal dimension of the relationship: travel references, requests for carnival tickets, telephone calls, social invitations and a 2025 breakfast at Motta’s residence. It treated those exchanges, alongside the R$22 million financing, as signs of a particularly close connection rather than merely routine institutional dialogue.

Commentary on X framed the disclosures in a broader congressional context, linking messages involving Vorcaro, Motta and Senate President Davi Alcolumbre to stalled impeachment proceedings, without supplying evidence for a direct connection.

The reports say Vorcaro’s defense did not respond before publication. Motta says he trusts the authorities responsible for any investigation.
