Starship Makes Orbit but Cuts Its Landmark Test Flight Short
The flight was presented as a major advance for SpaceX’s lunar, Mars and satellite ambitions, while its early conclusion underscored that the vehicle remains in an active test phase despite reaching a long-sought orbital milestone.
SpaceX’s 14th Starship test marked the first time the company’s giant launch vehicle reached Earth orbit, a result that advocates of the programme can point to as a significant step toward missions for NASA, Mars and the expanded Starlink network.
The vehicle lifted off from Starbase in South Texas and reached low Earth orbit at roughly 275 kilometres, despite the premature shutdown of an upper-stage engine during ascent. Flight controllers continued because the engine was no longer needed and the rest of the spacecraft was operating normally. SpaceX called the launch an “extremely important milestone” and used the flight to deploy 26 Starlink V3 satellites, its first operational payload release from Starship.1
That achievement contrasts with the mission’s shorter-than-advertised duration. The original plan called for a roughly 10-hour flight and six trips around Earth, intended to show that Starship could remain in orbit for the demands of NASA’s Artemis lunar programme. Instead, the spacecraft made two orbits before a controlled re-entry and splashdown in the Pacific north of Hawaii about three hours after liftoff. One account said SpaceX did not disclose why it shortened the flight.1
A second report emphasized the operational gains: SpaceX’s Starlink team established contact with all 26 satellites after deployment, while the Super Heavy booster completed its own mission in the Gulf of Mexico. It described the orbital insertion and satellite deployment as important development steps after about a decade of work and 13 earlier tests that had not put Starship in orbit.2
Together, the accounts portray a mixed but consequential test: Starship demonstrated orbital flight and payload deployment for the first time, yet its abbreviated mission left unanswered questions about the vehicle’s endurance and the reason for the revised flight plan.
