Pilgrimage bus crash leaves six dead as driver faces homicide arrest

Both accounts describe a devastating crash involving pilgrims and a large emergency response, but they differ in emphasis: one focuses on the driver’s arrest and alleged irregularities in the bus operation, while the other concentrates on the collision, casualties and unresolved cause.

A bus carrying pilgrims from Minas Gerais to Aparecida crashed into a ravine in Cruzeiro, in São Paulo’s Paraíba Valley, killing six people and injuring dozens. The driver was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide, according to one account, as authorities examine both the crash and the vehicle’s operating status.

The two reports agree on the core facts: the crash occurred early Sunday on the Doutor Avelino Júnior highway, the bus left the road in a mountainous stretch, and the driver tested negative for alcohol. The report focused on the arrest said the driver lost control of the chartered vehicle and that investigators would still determine why. It also said about 40 passengers were aboard.

That account places particular weight on regulatory concerns. Military police said the bus was operating with an expired National Land Transport Agency authorization and described the transport as clandestine. The vehicle’s documentation and the conditions under which it was operating are expected to form part of the inquiry.

The other report gave a higher passenger count — 48 pilgrims — and said the bus struck a car before leaving the roadway and falling roughly 15 metres down the ravine. It reported that firefighters logged the incident at about 5:15 a.m. near kilometre 232.6 of the SP-052.

Both reports list six fatalities, including two people aged about 65, two women around 45 and a 14-year-old. The second account detailed the scale of the medical response, saying 27 people were taken to Cruzeiro’s Santa Casa hospital, 12 to Lorena and two to Guaratinguetá. Firefighters, ambulance crews, civil defence and security forces joined the rescue effort.

While the arrest and authorization allegations add a legal dimension, neither report establishes the cause of the crash. Authorities’ investigation remains central to resolving how the bus lost control.
