The Discord has until this Monday (17) to prove to the [Agência Nacional de Proteção de Dados (ANPD)](https://www.gov.br/anpd/pt-br/assuntos/noticias/em-medida-preventiva-anpd-determina-que-discord-suspenda-transmissoes-ao-vivo-no-brasil) that it has suspended the Go Live feature, screen sharing, and equivalent video transmissions for users located in Brazil. However, the application has not been banned. Text messages and exclusively voice communications continue to operate normally on servers and in direct conversations.

The exact scope of the blocking, however, still raises doubts within the company itself. In an appeal filed with the agency, the Discord asked for clarification on whether the order also prohibits video calls with cameras between users, conversations in closed groups, and the use of cameras within voice channels. While the ANPD has not issued a detailed opinion on this point, the certainty of immediate suspension falls on the Go Live and screen sharing.

How Discord works and the impact on daily use

The decision hits the core of what makes the platform popular. The Discord is structured primarily in servers and groups chosen by users themselves. This architecture differs from traditional social networks: a group of friends can remain in a voice channel conversing while playing, and one of the participants can start a transmission of their own match without leaving the call.

With more than 90 million users active daily worldwide, the application has a massively connected audience to games. It is precisely in this daily use that the suspension will be most felt. Watching a friend's match, broadcasting the computer screen during a conversation, or following an event in a group are features directly affected.

The restriction reaches even subscribers of the paid Discord Nitro plan. The service offers benefits that include enhanced transmission features. With the blocking in effect, the advantage of streaming in high resolution loses utility in the suspended functionalities for users in the national territory.

Why the ANPD targeted the video of the platform

The preventive suspension integrates an investigation to investigate possible violations of the Estatuto Digital da Criança e do Adolescente (ECA Digital). The basis of the decision is supported by alarming data on public and digital security.

The [technical opinion that underlies the suspension](https://www.gov.br/anpd/pt-br/centrais-de-conteudo/documentos-tecnicos-orientativos/nota_tecnica_1_versao_publica_discord-inc.pdf/%40%40display-file/file) registers that the complaints involving Discord received by SaferNet Brasil jumped 54% in the first seven months of 2026. There were 406 records between January and July, against 264 in the same period of the previous year. The number marks a historical record for the interval since 2017.

According to the agency, live broadcasts appeared repeatedly in cases of serious violations against minors under 18 years of age. The inspection gained strength after Operation Lívia, which investigated a network suspected of luring minors and encouraging violent practices. Encryption at the center of the debate

Another central element for the agency is technical. Since March 2026, Discord has made end-to-end encryption mandatory for audio and video calls, broadcasts, and messages. The company argues that encryption protects user privacy and highlights the use of behavioral tools, metadata analysis, and community reports to ensure security. The agency, on the other hand, assessed that these safeguards have not demonstrated sufficient effectiveness in the face of the gravity of the risks. In a recent interview with the newspaper O Globo, Jud Hoffman, vice president of Security and Trust at Discord, admitted that the platform did not act with the necessary speed in the episodes that culminated in the current crisis in Brazil.

Discord contests deadline and asks for more time

The platform claims that three business days are insufficient to implement such a complex geographic blocking on computers, mobile phones, and consoles, in addition to creating effective mechanisms that prevent users from bypassing the restriction.

Discord requested the ANPD to revoke the measure or, as an alternative, a deadline of at least 15 business days counted from the agency's final clarification on which exact functionalities should be turned off.

The ANPD, however, informed that it will keep the preliminary injunction active while analyzing the appeal. In practice, the obligation to prove compliance with the initial blocking this Monday remains valid.

When lives may return

There is no defined date for the return of video functionalities. The suspension will continue until Discord demonstrates that it has implemented robust technical and governance measures to reduce risks. Furthermore, reactivation will not be automatic: the company will need to obtain express and prior authorization from the ANPD to re-establish the services.

If the company does not prove compliance with the order, the case may advance with severe sanctions. In a potential administrative sanctioning process, the ECA Digital provides for fines that can reach R$ 50 million per infraction.
