The minister of the STF Cristiano Zanin, reacted with hardness to the illegal exposure of his fiscal and banking data promoted by the former prosecutor and candidate for Senator in Paraná Deltan Dallagnol (Novo). This Saturday (5), Zanin sent an official letter to the president of the Regional Electoral Court of Paraná (TRE-PR), judge Luciano Carrasco Falavinha Souza, demanding the immediate end of the disclosure of his secrecy and asking for the criminal responsibility of those involved in the leak.
To defend himself from an impeachment request filed by the PT coalition, the former prosecutor attached the full text of secret proceedings from the National Council of the Public Prosecutor's Office (CNMP). The material contained fiscal data protected not only of Zanin, but also of his wife, his father-in-law, a sister-in-law and the law firm of which he was a partner before joining the STF.
The documents in question are the result of abuses of the extinct Operation Lava Jato. They were obtained when Zanin was acting as lawyer for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, based on a decision by judge Marcelo Bretas that was later annulled by the Second Panel of the STF. Bretas was responsible for Lava Jato in Rio de Janeiro and was sentenced in June this year to the maximum penalty of compulsory retirement.
At the time, Zanin filed a complaint with the CNMP against Deltan, and the prosecutors attached the Federal Revenue reports to the process.
Zanin asks for accountability of those involved
The electoral justice of Paraná was slow to react. The rapporteur of the case, Vanessa Jamus Marchi, only ordered the documents to be kept under judicial secrecy on Saturday afternoon, after the scandal was revealed by Demétrio Vecchioli's column in the portal Metrópoles.
“I inform that on today's date the Metrópoles portal published a journalistic report stating that Mr. Deltan Martinazzo Dallagnoll attached to his candidacy registration request fiscal and banking documents related to me that have secrecy protection – legal and procedural. In view of this, I request from Your Lordship measures aimed at rectifying this illegality as well as the necessary communications aimed at holding those involved accountable, including in the criminal sphere,” says Zanin's official letter.
In a statement, Deltan Dallagnol's defense tried to justify the leak by arguing that he presented the copies in full to act with "transparency" and prove his eligibility. The lawyers stated that they did not intend to expose the minister, but did not explain why they did not request, from the beginning, that the fiscal and banking data be kept confidential in the electoral justice system.
