The FBI warned California authorities that the state could become a target of attacks with drones made by the Iranian regime in retaliation for American and Israeli attacks.
The alert was issued in February, shortly after the operation in the Middle East began, according to ABC News.
The drones were reportedly transported near the West Coast of the US via an unidentified ship:
“We recently obtained information that in early February 2026, Iran allegedly intended to carry out a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the continental United States, specifically against unspecified targets in California, should the US carry out attacks against Iran,” the document stated.
The FBI did not clarify how or how close the ship could approach the American coast.
Furthermore, officials linked to the country's internal security have been concerned about the possibility of armaments being pre-positioned within or near American territory.
Former US intelligence chief John Cohen told ABC News that Iranian agents infiltrate Latin America:
“We know that Iran has an extensive presence in Mexico and South America; they have relationships, they have drones, and now they have the incentive to carry out attacks.”
The American government even offered a million-dollar reward for information about Hezbollah in Brazil.
The terrorist group is sponsored by the regime and uses the tri-border area to coordinate its financial activities, as well as being a refuge.
Argentina was already targeted by the organization's attacks against the local Jewish community throughout the 1990s.
Cohen continued to praise the FBI's alert, stating that the agency acted correctly by communicating with local authorities:
“The FBI was smart to issue this alert so that state and local authorities can better prepare and respond to this type of threat. Information like this is critically important to security forces.”
